Abstract: Group rings provide a setting for studying the action of a group on ring modules. Nearrings generalize the situation to non-abelian modules and semigroup nearrings provide a setting for studying the action of semigroups on arbitrary non-abelian modules. While group rings are well known, semigroup nearrings are not but they have interesting features and many interesting problems.
