Module choice for Single Subject Mathematics

First Year

You take two 30 credit modules that run during the entire teaching year:

In addition, in the Autumn Term you take

And in the Spring/Summer terms you take

Altogether you obtain a total of 120 credits in Mathematics.  These module are designed to give you a firm foundation across all areas of mathematics, and provide a platform for specialisation later in the degree.

Second Year

In the Spring and Summer Terms you must take two 20 credit modules:

In addition you choose 40 credits from the list of 2nd year Autumn Term modules and 40 credits from the list of 2nd year Spring/Summer Term modules.

You may replace up to 20 credits of optional modules with elective modules from other Departments, subject to the above constraints concerning the total number of credits in each term, and as long as the elective is at I-level. Please be aware of any implications this may have for your choice of modules in the third year.

Altogether you take 120 credits.

Final Year of BA/BSc

You take the BA/BSc Project (40 credits).

In addition you choose 80 credits from the list of third year modules, subject to the necessary prerequisites, but please note the following:

  • You normally choose 40 credits from the Autumn Term and 40 credits from the Spring/Summer Term.  Students are permitted to take 50 credits from the Autumn Term and 30 credits from the Spring/Summer Term if they so wish.
  • Students wishing to take 30 credits from the Autumn Term and 50 credits from the Spring/Summer Term will require approval from the Mathematics Board of Studies.
  • Not more than two of Lebesgue Integration MAT00013H (10 credits),  Algebraic Number Theory MAT00029H (10 credits) and Special Functions (10 credits) may normally be taken due to an element of front loading in these modules.
  • You may replace up to 20 credits of Mathematics modules with elective modules from other Departments, subject to the above constraints concerning the total number of credits in each term, and as long as the elective is at H-level.
  • You may take up to 20 credits of M-level modules, but your second year stage average MUST be at least 60%.  The pass mark for M-level modules is 50% and the compensatible fail mark is 40%.  These modules will have the same weight for classification as any H-level module.

Altogether you take 120 credits.

Third Year of MMath

You must choose two of the following three streams:

In addition you choose 60 credits from the other third year modules not already taken (other than BA/BSc Project). Students normally take 30 credits from the Autumn Term and 30 credits from the Spring Term.

You may replace up to 20 credits of optional modules with elective modules from other Departments, but you should be aware of any implications this may have for your choice of modules in the fourth year, and as long as the elective is at H-level.

Altogether you take 120 credits.

Final Year of MMath

You take the MMath Project (40 credits).

You choose 80 credits from the list of Masters modules, subject to the necessary prerequisites, but please note the following:

  • You normally choose 40 credits from the Autumn Term and 40 credits from the Spring/Summer Term.  Students are permitted to take 50 credits from the Autumn Term and 30 credits from the Spring/Summer Term if they so wish.
  • Students wishing to take 30 credits from the Autumn Term and 50 credits from the Spring/Summer Term will require approval from the Mathematics Board of Studies.
  • The Directed Learning module may only be chosen once.
  • Up to 40 credits may be replaced by optional modules from the 3rd year table, subject to the above constraints concerning the total number of credits in each term.
  • You may replace up to 20 credits of Mathematics modules with elective modules from other Departments, subject to the above constraints concerning the total number of credits in each term.
  • It is each student's responsibility to ensure that they have taken at least 120 credits of M-level modules over the course of their degree, otherwise an MMath cannot be awarded.

  Altogether you take 120 credits.
