Ph.D. student
About me I'm a third year PhD student in the department of Mathematics in the University of York, working under Eli Hawkins. I'm funded by the EPSRC. Before moving to York, I spent most of my life in London, where I studied at Imperial College.
Research interests I'm interested in Quantization, partcularly that of symplectic orbifolds and groupoids, and the geometry of Lie algebroids and Poisson structures.
Talks I've given 'Spheres and Division Algebras' University of York, 6/2/13 'Algebras, Groupoids and PhD life' University of York, UK 4/10/12 'Geometric Quantization' University of Cambridge, UK 3/11/11 'Orbifolds and Groupoids' University of York, UK 6/10/11 'Central Extensions and Quantization' University of York, UK 27/6/11 'Central Extensions and Quantization' University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US 17/6/11 'How to win a million dollars' University of York, UK 16/3/11
Conferences and Schools I've attended British Mathematical Colloquium 2013, Sheffield, UK 25/3/13 - 28/3/13 http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/maths/bmc2013 Workshop on Quantization and Reduction, Erlangen, Germany 18/3/13 - 21/3/13 http://www.algeo.math.fau.de/?id=3549 NAG (Noncommutative geometry, Analysis and Groups) 5th meeting, University of Leeds, UK 15/2/13 http://www.mitchener.staff.shef.ac.uk/NAG5.html First Erlangen fall school on Quantum Geometry, Erlangen, Germany 8/10/12 - 12/10/12 http://www.gravity.physik.fau.de/school/school.shtml POISSON 2012 (conference and summer school), Utrecht, Netherlands 23/7/12 - 3/8/12 http://www.projects.science.uu.nl/poisson201/Home.php UK-Japan Winter School 2012, University of Oxford, UK 4/1/12 - 8/1/12 http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/conferences/uk-japan-2012/ Young Researchers in Mathematics 2012, University of Bristol, UK 2/4/12 - 4/4/12 http://www.maths.bris.ac.uk/~maxsb/yrm/ NBMPS 31, University of Durham, UK 29/10/11 http://maths.dur.ac.uk/~dma0ped/NBMPS/NBMPS31.html Yorkshire Durham Geometry Days, University of York, UK 28/9/11 http://wwwusers.york.ac.uk/~cmw4/mysite/YorkDay.html LMS Short Course on Sympectic Geometry, Aberdeen, UK 10/7/11 - 15/6/11 http://www.maths.abdn.ac.uk/~kedra/lms/ Program on Quantization (conference and summer school), Notre Dame, US 31/5/11 - 10/6/11 http://nd.edu/~cmnd/conferences/quantization/Index.html http://nd.edu/~cmnd/graduate/index.html Young Functional Analysts Workshop, University of York, UK 6-8/4/11 http://sites.google.com/site/yfawuk/past-years/2011 Young Researchers in Mathematics 2011, University of Wawrick, UK 14-16/4/11 http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/postgrad/events/yrm2011/ NBMPS 29, Edinburgh, UK 16/2/11 http://www.ma.hw.ac.uk/~bernd/NBMPS29.html MAGIC postgraduate student conference, University of Reading, UK 12-14/1/11 http://www.personal.reading.ac.uk/~sms09m2/ ENRAGE Quantum Gravity Meeting, Imperial College London, UK 1/9/09 http://www.phys.uu.nl/~loll/enrage/enragetitle/enragetitle.html
Teaching and marking Last year I did seminars for Linear Algebra, this year I'm marking assignments for the same course.
Postgraduate Seminars Together with Benjamin Lang I coorganise (organise with all the arrows reversed) the Postgraduate seminars. See the webpage for more information and upcoming talks.
MAGIC The university of York is one of 19 universities belonging to the MAGIC network, funded by the EPSRC and the member universities. The network runs a number of graduate courses that students can watch live and interact with the lecturer via Acces Grid technology. I found the lectures extremely useful and attended or partly attended the following courses: · MAGIC 008 Lie Groups and Lie Algebras · MAGIC 009 Category Theory · MAGIC 048 Complex Differential Geometry · MAGIC 061 Pure Functional Analysis · MAGIC 028 Geometric Structures on Surfaces and Teichmuller Space · MAGIC 040 Operator Algebras · MAGIC 062 Applied Functional Analysis · MAGIC 064 Algebraic Topology · MAGIC 073 Commutative Algebra · MAGIC 074 Algebraic Geometry
