Personal interests include: Photography - Living in York and working on campus has lead to an interest in photography. Above is a collection of snapshots taken since 2008. The Department has been kind to allow me to publish photos on its website and use them for its UCAS powerpoint presentation. Many staff photos have been published in University magazine issues. My husband initially gave me a small compact camera for my birthday in 2008, which got me going, and then built me a pc and gave me a more complicated camera in 2011. I've been enjoying my husband's photography for years; The Department of Mathematics has three of his photos in its galleries - Minster, another Minster shot and a Minster ceiling shot. I've not had lessons yet, but plan to. Photo publishing success: A photo of Professor Evgeni Skylanin FRS has been published on the University of York's front page, Professor emeritus Nigel Cutland in the Guardian newspaper print version (page 3, 11th December 2010, Money section) and of Nicholas Page (Mathematics Graduate Secretary) in a book entitled 'The Best Days of Our Lives? Secondary Education in York 1900-1985' - ISBN 978-1 874454 49 6, forth book listed at: http://www.yorkarchaeology.co.uk/resources/pubs.htm. Sport: If you like sport and the idea of self defence, mathematical geometry and physics, Taekwondo may be for you - the first taster session is free, Tuesdays and Thursdays 7-8 pm (free parking at St Peter's, cross over the foot bridge in the grounds to the St Olave's site gymnasium) so why not try it out! Consider entering competitions from the beginner belts, it's a challenge and gives you a better understanding of the sport/martial art early on. I've been learning TaeKwondo (York TAGB) since ~January 2009 studying with Andy Parr (2nd in the world in 2007) physics and cricket teacher at St Peter's School, he did an astrophysics masters at Leeds. I was placed 2nd in the Blue belt, Lightheavy weight division at the TAGB English Championships 2012 in Telford, losing to Claire Burke, astrophysics PhD student at Liverpool John Moores University. If you would like to try a combination of drumming, gymnastics and breakdancing try Capeira (Brazialian fight dancing), I recommend it. |
