LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of their ability to communicate in English.

We normally look for the following as a minimum:

  • IELTS (Academic Test) with a score of at least 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 in each component

  • or TOEFL* (Academic Test) with a score of at least 87 in the internet-based test

  • or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English grade A, B or C

  • or Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English grade A

  • or Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic with a score of at least 61

Candidates holding a degree from a university in a country where English is the official teaching language are normally exempt from providing evidence of their ability to communicate in English provided that this qualification has been achieved within two years of the intended start date of their course at York.

All English language test scores submitted by applicants are subject to verification.

*Applicants are also advised that, with immediate effect (April 2014) the UK Home Office has suspended accepting ETS tests as evidence of English language ability.  Therefore we will no longer be able to accept TOEFL tests. Applicants needing to meet an English Language condition are advised to take a test with an alternative approved provider.

In some cases applicants who have not achieved the level required may be given conditional acceptance, subject to achieving the prescribed standard by the starting date of the course.
