Welcome to the Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics combines leading mathematical and interdisciplinary research with high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, in which we place particular emphasis on small groups and a friendly atmosphere. We work over a wide range of specialised interests in the areas of pure mathematics (including algebra, geometry, analysis and number theory), applied mathematics (including continuum mechanics and mathematical biology), mathematical physics (including quantum information, quantum field theory and quantum gravity), mathematical finance and statistics. Alumni: York graduates in mathematics wishing to contact the department are welcome to do so by contacting the Mathematics General Office or any current member of academic staff. Please update your contact details.
Niall MacKay and Evgeny Sklyanin FRS have been awarded £355,702 by the EPSRC for a project ‘Nonultralocality and new mathematical structures in quantum integrability’. The project includes two postdoctoral researchers and a PhD studentship and runs from 2009 to 2012

Every year, York University Students' Union asks for nominations from students for the best academic supervisor and makes an award to those academics who have 'gone the extra mile'. This year we are delighted to report that 20 supervisors in the Department of Mathematics received nominations. As a result, a special award of "Best Department" was created and presented to the Head of Department, Stephen Donkin, at the Supervisor of the Year award ceremony on 2nd July 2009.
