The course

Mathematics and Physics are natural subjects to combine in a single degree, and particularly so at York, which is one of the few universities with a wide range of theoretical physics in both the Mathematics and the Physics departments. The Mathematics department has many theoretical physicists among its staff, and offers modules up to and including general relativity and quantum field theory, and projects in areas like quantum gravity and string theory. The degree is available in  three- and four-year variants or with an exchange year in continental Europe.

Initially it is equally split between the two departments. At the end of the second year, you decide whether to choose a Mathematics or a Physics route, with your final-year project in that department.

The combinations with a year in Europe will have placements in either Mathematics or Physics departments, although in most cases a mix of modules in possible. Details are as for the single-subject programme.
