Algebra Research Group

Algebraic research at York covers a wide spectrum of interests, from pure group theory, representation theory and semigroup theory to applications of algebraic techniques in geometry, quantum physics and biology. The department is a fertile breeding ground for research, with regular organized seminars and study groups complemented by plenty of opportunities for informal discussion. We are also always on the lookout for strong PhD students in all areas of algebra; please get in touch with any member of staff if you want to find out more. For details of individual members' interests, please click here.

Seminars and Study Groups

We run a weekly Algebra Study Group during termtime. Please contact Michael Bate for details of the current topic, or to be included on the email list for this group.

External speakers in the area of Algebra are usually invited to give a talk in the Algebra Seminar, which is also a forum for internal research seminars. The next talk is shown below.

The probability that two elements of a finite group are conjugate

Series:
Algebra Seminar
Date and time:
May 21, 2012, 16:15 - 17:15
Speaker:
Mark Wildon (Royal Holloway)
Room:
G/001

Let $\kappa(G)$ be the probability that two elements, chosen uniformly at random from a finite group $G$, are conjugate. I will speak on joint work with Simon Blackburn and John R. Britnell in which we classify all groups such that $\kappa(G) \geq 1/4$ and show that $1/4$ is the largest limit point of $\kappa$. I will also give an overview of related results on the conjugacy probability for symmetric groups.

The York Semigroup meets every week in term time and is a mixture of informal sessions, led by York Semigroup PhD students, and more formal presentations.
