Why study Mathematics at York?

York’s three-year mathematics programme provides not only the generic skills highly sought after by employers but also the mathematical knowledge specifically required for certain careers. A four-year programme is also offered, for those who wish to study mathematics to a higher level and prepare for careers as professional mathematicians in industry and research.

"The quality of the four-year MMath programme is impressive ... the best students [are] comparable with the best anywhere"
- Prof. Anne Davis (Cambridge), External Examiner

The first year provides a solid foundation in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. This allows you, from the second year onwards, the opportunity to study the areas that most interest you from a wide choice of modules, from Group Theory to Classical Mechanics, from Financial Mathematics to Medical Statistics.

In your final year, you spend one third of your time producing a substantial project in an area of your choice.
