Overseas applicants

The Department and the University welcomes applicants from around the world, and has a thriving international community made up of both students and staff. This community, together with our research links with other academic institutions across the globe, creates a vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

You will always be considered individually on your merits (however unusual your qualifications). Our offer will require that you obtain a top grade in a mathematics qualification which contains the core of the UK A-level, together with a very good overall school-leaving grade.

The university has an International Office which is pleased to assist overseas students, in particular with questions concerning fees and living in York, and an International Students Association.

Scholarships

In addition to the university's Scholarships for Overseas Students, the department now has its own scholarships for students paying overseas fees.

English language

All teaching is in English, and the university offers free, specialized English language tuition for first year students. However, if English is not your native language and you have not been taught principally in English for the last few years, then you will need an English language qualification for admission, typically IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each unit (or equivalent). You can find answers to some other common questions, concerning for example International Foundation Programmes, on our FAQs page.

"I visited York before applying to the University. I fell in love with this small and tranquil city because it has time-honoured history and culture. I was attracted to the beautiful campus university and its study atmosphere. In addition, the University of York has an impressive academic reputation. I really enjoyed studying for the Maths and Statistics degree. The degree course was well-structured; we not only studied conceptual and theoretical knowledge but also learned to use some useful computer programs, such as Maple, R and LaTeX. The lectures, small group tutorials and seminars were all inspiring and my supervisor and lecturers in the Maths department were very friendly and patient. My favourite aspect of the course was the flexibility in choosing modules: I could also choose some modules from different departments which I was interested in."

"York has a long history of culture that attracted me to apply to the University of York; it is such a good place for an international student to further understand the real English culture. My three-year course provided me with an ideal opportunity to improve my awareness of applied mathematics and statistics, which helped me to acquire the ability to analyze datasets accurately, using several pieces of appropriate software. The skills I gained in this programme helped me to be accepted for postgraduate study, and will be useful in later life when I hope to work in the actuarial profession."
